The kid had a magic ticket, which would let a person go in and/or out of the movie.

From near the end of the movie:

"We've got to get him back in the movie, where this will be only a flesh wound!"

After he's back in the movie:

The doctor: "Are you kidding? This doesn't even qualify as a flesh wound!"

(Not sure of the exact words, but that's fairly close.)
