Chimpanzees Seen 'Mourning' Late Friend
A group of chimpanzees have been captured on camera apparently lost in grief for the death of a friend.
The huddled chimps pay their respects to Dorothy. Photo: Monica Szczupider/Solent
More than a dozen apes watched in silence from their enclosure in Cameroon as the body of Dorothy, a chimp in her 40s, was wheeled past for burial.
Dorothy, who died of heart failure, was described as a "prominent figure" within the group of about 25 chimps at the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Centre.
The photo was taken by 30-year-old Monica Szczupider.
She was working at the centre, which cares for orphaned animals whose mothers were killed for the illegal bushmeat trade.
"We were burying Dorothy," she said. "We brought her in the wheelbarrow to let the others see.
"I cannot emphasise enough how silent and still they were. Chimpanzees are typically not like that.
"They are loud, with short attention spans. It was unbelievably emotional. We were all struck."

Are Blue Whales Trying to Summon Their ET Brethren?
They may not be humpbacks, but Blue Whales have been singing a different tune lately, specifically their songs have changed to deeper tones, and scientists don’t know why. Mark McDonald, president of Whale Acoustics, a company that specializes in the sonic monitoring of cetaceans, noticed the change beginning 8 years ago. Their detectors are triggered by songs that match a particular waveform. Every year, McDonald had to set them lower. Scientists do not have any answers at this point, only lots of recordings and lots of questions. Of course, it seems obvious if you’re well versed in your history of the future. They are just communicating with the giant starship-destroying, rod-shaped probe floating in space near the whale home world! Any vulcan could tell you that!
Because EVERYTHING makes more sense when compared to dinosaurs!

My votes on the cigar/star/ship.
Re: Animal Planet
Saw a lizard while walking yesterday evening (a very brief glimpse, actually).
It was small, green, and unsociable to large scaleless bipeds.

Re: Animal Planet
Still haven't figures out how to get my sound back so the voice over is useless to me. I guess they also need close captioning.
Re: Animal Planet
There's a lot of mumbling and off-camera talking that doesn't quite get picked up, not a great deal of meaningful narration, except for this: In a nutshell, they found what they thought was a dead humpback whale. Then it forcefully exhaled and they realized that it was not yet dead, but severely tangled in gill nets. Its tail and pectoral fins were completely immobilized. Over a couple of hours, they gradually got it cut free, with it taking them for a ride a couple of times until it would get exhausted. Finally, they made their last cut and the whale swam away, then treated them to about 40 breaches.
