What do you think? Should I apply?

Go for it!
Um, can a claustrophobic, slightly over weight, retired (and loving it) mature citizen, , apply?

Re: NASA is taking apps for the 2009 astronaut candidate class
The only hitch is that all the training takes place at Johnson Space Center, which would require a move. It would be a no-brainer for me if it was here at Kennedy Space Center. My best friend came from Houston. He said he wouldn't want to live there again. But Clear Lake he says is a lot better, and would be closer to JSC.
I looked up one of the classes and the age range was 28-43: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/new ... 4-152.html
They don't much distinguish Air Force vs. civilian anymore, that I can tell. The real distinction is pilots vs. non-pilots.
Their eyesight requirement is "correctable to 20/20".
I can't help thinking maybe this is my first mid-life crisis moment.
But then I look at the age range of that recent class, and if you throw out the 28 year old, I'm right in the middle of the 34-43 range. And I certainly have the qualifications, I've always tested in the 99th percentile, I have two engineering degrees and almost 18 years of experience in simulators and training systems.
It was kind of a joke at first, but I'm starting to think hey, what's the harm in applying? Nothing ventured, nothing gained, after all.

I'll apply but only if they have need of an elderly janitor.

Brian......you sound like a good candidate. Can't hurt to fill out the application....and your qualifications sound like you would be a good prospect. You've got my vote!
Besides.....I want a tour of the Space Center and who better to show me around that an Astronaut?
