I have some internet friends in Europe and they are melting with temperatures in the 90's in the Netherlands and 103 in London. They don't have AC there. And it was in the upper 90's in Quebec last week. At least it's not that unusual in SC to have that kind of weather.Xjmt wrote: We're starting to sound like one of those planets normally labeled "uninhabitable".

Probably "all of the above". I did hear some radio reports, here in California, worrying about the storms causing more fires.....more like a "Catch 22".......they welcome the storms to help put out the fires but are worried what will happen with the lightning.Xjmt wrote:Was it California or Arizona/New Mexico they feared that thunder storms bringing lightning might start more fires? Some places can't get rain without fearing lightning starting fires.

I have this zipper pouch organizer thing that straps onto my sun visor. I keep receipts in there, and cards that I don't use on a daily basis but need to have at hand when I want them (theme park annual passes, supermarket discount cards, Sam's Club card, etc.).
I have kept these cards in this same organizer for at least 10 years, in three different vehicles (the current one being for the past 4 years).
Within the last month, my cards have started warping, curling up on the edges like they've been in the oven on 'broil'.
Why is this? Why haven't they ever melted before?
Is the UV radiation this summer more intense, or what?
Is ten years of UV exposure on credit cards cumulative, and I've just passed some critical threshold?
This is a complete mystery to me.
And it makes me afraid to go outside without a hat.
I figure it has to be higher levels of UV or something, not temperatures. As hot as it is, it's still not atypical for a Florida summer. We've been getting into the lower 90's, and in Aug/Sep we usually approach the 100 degree mark.

As I said "uninhabitable".
My guess would be that you're right about increased UV. They say that hole in the sky letting the UV through is getting bigger.
A friend in his early 70s recently passed away from 'skin cancer'. Or whatever its real name is. He always vacationed in Acapulco, never wore a hat or shirt and sat on the beach reading novels all day then hit the casinos at night. Lots of UV on him.
What I never realized is the spot on the skin is only one end of the cancer. It travels throughout the body. The doctors removed a lesion from his shoulder and they thought he'd be fine but then the side of his chest broke out in more lesions and he died only months later.
Guess we gotta investigate wide brimmed hats and sun screen UV rated 50+.

Help me Aunti Emm, I'm melting
Can't answer your question Brian. It's too hot to go outside my comfortable new AC unit in the house to look up into the sky.

Over this past day and a half we had rain that managed to lower the temps instead of raising the humidity. Slept with window open last night. Had dinner al fresco last night.
OTOH weather warnings for 3 or 4 Eastern counties in Ohio to be prepared for flooding. We're somewhat elevated here. Our lakes have gates for regulating the water flow downstream If the gates go the city of Cleveland become part of Lake Erie.
