Earthquake 5.8

Post by lswot » Tue Jul 29, 2008 12:18 pm

Wow.....just had an earthquake. We really rocked and rolled and I have to tell you my heart was in my throat. I was playing a game on the computer (very important) but.....I immediately got up and stood in the doorway.....although.....I have heard that isn't smart....but, I felt safer. They announced a 2.4 aftershock, which I didn't feel. We have those periodically......but, this 5.8 got my attention. The epicenter was near the Whittier Narrows fault......which is where an earthquake was centered years ago when I was at the Grand Slam. We were in the auditorium and the room was huge....and lights over head where swinging back and forth. My Friend Kim, from Wisconsin, made her first trip out here, then and first thing she said when she got off the airplane was....Wow! I'm in California. Now all we need is an earthquake. I told her to bite her tongue....sure enough we had an earthquake. (remember L'Hawk?) Did quite a bit of damage, too. But, I haven't heard any reports of damage from this one. They've reported that the epicenter was in Chino Hills. I guess they really felt it in the high rises. It was enough to unnerve me I can imagine how it affected them!
All is fine with me.......heart still in throat.....but, doing ok.

I'm glad to hear all is OK. I was once on the outer fringe of an earthquake and I could feel my chair moving across the floor.

11:40am Sure got my attention. I guess there was some minor damage.....and they have downgraded the quake to a 5.4......but, it sure felt like a 5.8! :) There have been a lot of aftershocks.......but, not felt.....at least by me.
Thanks for the good wishes, guys. When it starts it is pretty :umm:

Well don't think you would have 'slept' through this one.....but, ya never know.

Ok.....wits are back. Did some 'research' and that earthquake we went trhough "years back"...at the Grand Slam in Pasadena (then), was: Sunday March 20, 1994 at 1:20pm and it was a 5.3! I was in error calling it the Whittier/Narrows......that one took place in October 1987. They recorded this one as an 'After Shock' of the Northridge Quake which took place Jan 17, 1994, 6.7 with 60 deaths (most from a collapsed hosipital in Northridge). I think that's what was on Kim's mind when she first landed at LAX and made that remark about our having an earthquake now that she was in California. Needless to say.....we do have quakes, here.

There was a bigger one in ....err....87/88 that leveled most of the freeway bridges in the La area. 6.8??? I think. (caint remember that far back) I slept thru it. Awoke the next morning and couldn't go home due to alllll the freeways Out of LA being shut down due to no bridges and if memory serves, there was a gigantic hole in the freeway over the grapevine.
Once asleep, you could drop a bomb next to me and I'd sleep thru it.

It would have been one of those. I was in San Bernadino at a friends house at the time. (thought for sure it was larger than that....oh well. That's what I get for thinking. :D )

Well......the closer you are to the epicenter the worse it is.....so, it probably did feel stronger to you. That 'after shock' we felt at the Con was closer to the epicenter and it did feel stronger than recorded.

Wasn't it Northridge that leveled the freeways? Was that the one that occurred during the World Series game?
