Sacred constant might be changing
Physical constants are one of the cornerstones of physics – sacred numbers which we know to be fixed – but what if some of these constants are changing? Speaking at the Institute of Physics conference Physics 2005, Dr Michael Murphy of Cambridge University will discuss the “fine structure constant” – one of the critical numbers in the universe which seems to be precisely tuned for life to exist – and suggest that it might not be constant after all.
(Whoa!)

'Strange' physics experiment is unraveling structure of proton
An international team of nuclear physicists has determined that particles called strange quarks do, indeed, contribute to the ordinary properties of the proton.
(Reality is "strange"r than fiction, huh?)

*

Liverpool scientists help to solve the mysteries of quarks
Particle Physicists are embarking on a new attempt to solve the mysteries of quarks with the completion of the three most powerful supercomputers ever applied to this problem, [...] yet it is impossible to examine a single quark in the laboratory.
(If not a single one, what about a married one?)

Um....we've always thought Quark to be strange. :?
And NO ONE, not even a SuperComputer can understand Quark.
"They" need to watch some DS9 episodes. :)

More Quark news!

Higher Precision Analysis Doesn’t Yield Pentaquark
New, higher precision data that could only have been gathered at the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) shows the Theta-plus pentaquark doesn’t appear in another place it was expected. This intriguing finding contradicts evidence previously presented by Jefferson Lab researchers that they had sighted a pentaquark, a particle built of five quarks.

Early Universe was packed with mini black holes
Most cosmologists believe that supermassive black holes grew up in big galaxies, accumulating mass as time went on. But Haehnelt says there is increasing evidence for a different view – that small black holes grew independently and merged to produce the giants which exist today.

Bottom quarks reveal something of their identity
Dutch researcher Bram Wijngaarden investigated how bottom quarks are created during collisions between protons and antiprotons. Wijngaarden's measurements have contributed to a better understanding of the theory, and can be used to explain why the production of these quarks during such collisions is higher than had originally been expected.
(Are these researchers finally getting to the "bottom" of things? :) )
